The origins of the Association for Asian Studies began with the publication of the Bulletin of Far Eastern Bibliography in 1936. The Bulletin was expanded in a more comprehensive journal in 1941 and renamed The Far Eastern Quarterly . Paul Hyer is a professor of history at BYU and the first coordinator of Asian Studies. He has traveled extensively through China and has devoted his academic life to the study of China and Mongolia. He was born in 1914. Sechim Jagchid was born and raised in Mongolia.
